Viborg is one of the oldest cities in Denmark dating back before 8th century.  It had been a university town back to 1020. It was used to educate boys and young men for service in the church.  It is still in operation through the Danish government as the oldest educational institution in Denmark.  They celebrated their 900th anniversary in 2000.

The Viborg Cathedral began construction in 1130.  It was completed in fairly short time of only 50 years compared with other cathedrals of Europe.

The lower chapel of the church is probably much older than the upper part.   The roof is still lead after the original design.  The bells in the belfry ring regularly using an electrically times mechanism.  "Skipper Clement", the leader of the peasant revolt against Christian III and his father was put down brutally in the nearby town of Aalborg.  Although Clement escaped injured he was later given up by a local farmer then imprisoned for over a year to be finally beheaded in front of this Viborg Cathedral.  My cousin and I are related through his daughter and stand her at his statue as his grandsons.  The statue is in Aaborg.
