The St. Budolfi Cathedral is the main church in the center of old Aalborg for the Lutheran Diocese of Aalborg. The three original Catholic churches built in the 10thc were destroyed by the Reformation of 1536.  An original stone from the first church of about 1132 is in the basement.  The church had to be rebuilt in the 16c.  The Catholic Cathedral was the center of the peasant rebellion of Skipper Clement.  The original wood churches were small but seen as a symbol of Catholicism that the Royalist were trying to stamp out to be replaced by German Lutheran church.  Even though there was a major slaughter of the defenders of Aalborg and sever penalties were exacted on the survivors, it took until 1554 for St Bodolfi to become the seat of the Lutheran Bishop of Aalborg.
