birth dates according to wikipedia.org.

King of Denmark, Konge af Danmark, Flygtede fra blodgildet i Roskilde og besejrede Svend Grathe i 1157, hvorefter han blev konge. Valdemar førte korstog med venderne, og indtog Arkona i 1169.

Valdemar I was born days after his father, Duke Cnut Lavard, was killed by Magnus I of Sweden "the Strong"(1106  d. 1134), son of King Niels(abt 1065- d. 25 Jun 1135).

Valdemar the Great is said to have lead a group of crusaders who put the town of Arkona on the Baltic Sea under siege to prevent their raiding of the Danish coast. They conquered the sacred and fortified shrine to the heathen deity to Savantevit in 1168/9. After its destruction they became Christian subjects of Denmark. [Foundation for Medieval Genealogy]

#Margarete Valdemarsdottir inclusion in the family is listed as a "nun in Roskilde" in Roskilde Cathedral and wikipedia web sites.  There is no known record for the connection I have listed for the marriage to Alexander Pedersen other than circumstantial.  Even though Margarete is listed by Roskilde as "a nun" this does not preclude her to have been married with family.    Many young girls may have been forced into nunnery by pregnancy out of wedlock which probably not the case here.  With Valdemar's own history I doubt this would be the case.  Although I don't have any specific dates to confirm this, it is possible that Margarete my have gone to a "nunnery" after raising her family.  This actually is a tradition still found in Buddhism in Nepal for one.  Frequently widows who have raised their families enter the Buddhist convents for support and to carry out the religious principles of faith and sharing. Also remember that she was fifteen years years old at the time of here father, Vlademar I, dies.  She is obviously raised by her mother and court attendants.

A brief chronology Historical Dictionary of Denmark, Alastair H. Thomas shows some more details on the family.

valdemar's chronology

Valdemar II (1170- 1231) conquered a good deal of the territory of Scandinavia.  His second wife provided him with seven children.  Their marriages sealed the connections with Portugal, Sweden, Norway, Holstein, and Pomerania. He is most famous for the story of the present flag of Denmark that came to him in a Battle of Lindanise in 1219. It is the oldest European flag design still in modern use.
