He later shows on a tax list in Franklin Co., VA [D. Morton Rose, email of 7/4/98]
1787 Richard and his wife Mary sign the deed of sale for their property in Franklin Co., VA.

1787- Richard and Mary, his wife, left Franklin Co., VA in and came to Sevier Co., TN. With them came his sons William and Richard, Jr..

c1807- Richard and Mary are shown in the as being husband and wife. The church records of the in Sevier Co. start in 1807 and give a lot of information on the Varnells. In most cases the church records indicate when the Varnells left for areas west. They were very active in the church and one of their fellow church members came to Sevier Co., TN with them from Franklin Co., VA.

"It is unknown where or when William and Lydia married. They had been in Sevier Co., TN for three years before the first child was born. Their son, William and Lydia, have all of their children in Sevier County. During part of this period Sevier Co. was part of Territory South of the Ohio River and then in 1796 it became part of Tennessee."
