Caleb Kirkland Bible jpg

This bible was a prized possession of Elijah Kirkland, the son of Zacheriah Kirkland, the son of Caleb. It was passed down to his daughter, Alice Kirkland Allen. It is still in the possession of Dudley Allen's widow. It only consists of one page, the back of the page has a similar border but is blank. All the other pages of the bible were discarded so we can't precisely date its origin. Since it seems to be written in the same hand and apparently at the same time we don't believe it was Caleb's original bible. I propose that it was a gift to Elijah by either his father, grandfather or other relative just as he went off to the Civil War. The information seems to have been copied very faithfully with only the small additions of the letters after some of the births. We feel these later additions indicated the day of the week on which they were born. The version that I present here has been reduced in size from its approximate original 8.5 x 10" format. It has been slightly enhanced for readability from my own photocopy version.

The Scott Family Bible is more intact and appears to be from the same publisher. It has a similar border on the page and even the hand writing looks similar for some entries. We have more information on this bible with bible being intact with the Entry page showing that the Bible was published 1840 in Cooperstown, (N. Y.) by H. & E. Phinney. Lannie Walker has put up information on the Scott Family on this web site.

The Scott Family Bible is shown here.
