According to Gifford White, "James White
appears on the land records of South Carolina (at the same time as John
and Reuben) although there is no proof that he ever lived there.
In 1777-79 he appears (with the other) in the land records of Burke
Co., N. Car. He was never called Junior and it is my opinion that James
Taylor White died before the removeal to Burke C."
1778, 10 Feb. - James White enter in Burke
County 200 acres of Land in the Mulberry fork beginning on a
conditional made by John Brimley and said White and running down both
sides of siad fork and
including a mill seat on the west side and an improvement against siad
tract
and the improvement that the said White now lives on the East side of
the
fork for complmt. Entered 10 February 1778. [Land Entries ss 949
Bruke
Co., N. C.]
1780-81 - James and John White are listed in
the tax rolls of Washington Co., N. Carolina. This area is
presently in Tennessee.
1781 - John and James sold their lands and
cattle and apparently invested there cash in slaves which were
considered
a more portable way to transfer their wealth to the new land.
[White, p13]
1782, May - James White and family are listed
as having arrived in Natchez Territory by the Spanish authorities. Also
listed at the same time is John White and William Dewitt, his
brother-in-law. The Spanish rec ords list him as Tiago White,
Tiago being the same as
James.
Tiago White,
wife & children 11 individuals 1 slave
It is unknown who else may have been
here
other than the children. If the above dates are correct none of
the
above children should have been born by the immigration to Natchez.
I wonder if James would have accepted the responsiblity of some
accompanying
neices and nephews. He could also have had at least two other
children
by this date.
1782, June 1 - James White sold to Widow Anne
McIntosh a negro woman, aged 40, of Barbados. $300 in cows, etc.
[Natchez Court
Records, 1781-1798]
1785 - Reuben, James' son, gives a deposition
along with his mother, Jerusha, in the trial of William Dewitt/Duett.
Reuben was probably old enough, being probably ast least
eighteen, to give a legal deposition. This also means to me that
James was married by
1765 and was probably born before 1745.
"The declaration of Reuben White and Mrs. White and Mrs. White, his mother, sayeth that in the latter part of the year 1781, John White was living in Washington, North Carolina, and that he went to Kentucky to buy salt and when said White set off for salt the deceaased wife of Mr. William Dewitt was alive and when the said Jaohn White returned William Dewitt's wife was dead and Mr. dewitt had gone to Burke County near about 100 miles the contrary way to be married to the woman that he now has got, and ... James White, deceased, father of Reuben White, and husband to Mrs. White... James White.. said to his brother John White... " 31 Jany 1785.
