For years we believed that Christian Grubb and his family came on the "Robert and Alice" in 1738.  Recently we became aware of the family entering on the "Allen" in 1729.  This has caused us to reassess the alignment of the first two known generation in the colonies.  Although this family is the family listed by Jane Grubb Creel's book "My Name's Grubb," the baptismal records of the Peak Mountain Church casts doubts about the birthdates of the children as reported in her book, . The order of birth may actually be different than we have listed for the first four children. Abraham became executor of the estate of Christian Grubb and we (Ernest Grubb and Cheryl G.) therefore conclude he must be the oldest although he could be the oldest of the surviving children as easily. Or perhaps simply the oldest son.

1729-
We know for certain that Christian Grubb Sr. and his family were members of the Brethren church,  also known as the Anabaptists or German Baptists.  There is a list of converts who joined the German Baptist Brethren in Europe which includes the names of Daniel, Jacob, Andrew, Christian and Christian Cropp Jr.  [Brethren Church Rec.]  Meaning, of course, that they joined before 1729 when they came to the colonies on the ship "Allen" that  arrived in the colonies from Rotterdam on September 11, 1729, James Craigie, master. ["Passengers of the Allen" - The Brethren Network].  All the men listed here were also listed as passengers on the "Allen" along with Rosine Kropf, is identified by position on the list as the wife of Christian Sr.  There were no children under the age of 15 with this name. On this list were fifty-nine families from Palatine area of Germany that made up "about hundred and twenty six persons" (I counted 132).  Daniel Kropf is listed as "sick" as well as being separately listed many individuals away from the others in the list.  We believe this means that he was not child of Christian Sr. but could have been a brother or cousin. [roster of Progenealogits]

as listed in the record:
Christoph Kropf
Rosina
Andreas Kropf      "sick"
Jacob Kropf
Christoph Kropf, jun.
second to the last in the list
Daniel Kropf

Ms. Whipple indicates that the group of Brethren were led by Alexander Mack, a minister from Surhuisterveen, Holland.  Apparently Mack went into Germany converted and recruited pilgrims to emigrate.  The area that they came from is identified as the region of Wittgenstein.
I found the general area and the actual town of Wittgenstein only a few miles west of the town of Laasphe.   This is almost exactly in the middle of a triangle made by the towns of Koln, Kassels and Frankfurt in present day Germany. [ Whipple, Judith Cox - Brethren Network]

There has always been a question about how or why Christian came to the colonies.  We feel certain that it was to escape persecution for his religious beliefs.  The Anabaptist or Dunkers, as a group, believed that infant baptism was much too premature and began urging re-baptism of the adult populous.  They also believed that swearing an oath of loyalty to anyone but God was wrong.  This was viewed as blasphemy and treasonous and brought down reactions that included psychological and physical abuse including being burned at the stake.  [Brethren Network]

We know that Christian Jr first came in 1729.  We know that both Christian and Christian Jr. came at the same time with his father's wife.   I believe that the family we have here on this page is actually Christian Jr.  He had to have been an adult over age 15 when he came here and according to the 1738 ship record in which he was 35, this would have made him 29 years old in 1729.  We believe he was born then in Germany but his children would have to be born in the colonies.  If the other children's birthdates are correct,  he may have been gone only for a year or two.  Since Rosini Kropf is listed next to Christian Sr. in the
Progenealogits records , I assumed her to be his wife and the probably mother of Christian Jr.   In the Peak Mountain church record of 1762, however, we know that Christian was married to "Rosina, nee Kipp".   Christian Grubb Sr. would probably have died by this point based on the age of Christian on his trip in 1738.  I believe that Christian Sr. would have been minimally 94 years old 1762.

1738, Sept. 11 - Christian Grub[sic] arrived at Philadephia, PA from Rotterdam on board the "Robert and Alice."  He is apparently traveling be himself and his age is listed as 35 years old.  No other Grub/Grubb/Krupf are on board.   He does list his destination as Lancaster, we believe PA.   There are several other families that are also going to Lancaster in the list.  We don't know if they had any relationship with our Christian.

All male passengers signed into the ship's log. Christian signed in German as Christian Krupf. Wanger believed that Christian Grubb possibly came from Germany. Others believe they may have been from the German speaking region of Switzerland. [records of Devore & Wanger] All passengers were required to take an Oath of Allegiance to the King of England. Christian signed in his native language of German. [List of immigrants taking "oath" Sept.11, 1738 Philadelphia] The Grubs went to Pennsylvania first then to Virginia.

1738 - Christian Kropf Jr.  received a warrant for land in Tulpehocken Township, Lancaster county Pennsylvania.  [Pough] I think the date here is wrong based on the following document.

1741, Dec 10 - The following document is handwritten and faint in areas.  The digital image is available on Ancestry.com. The date is very legible.

The Peaked Mountain Church was an early German Lutheran church and holds some of the earliest records of colonist of German descent. In various records of the Peaked Mountain Church, their last name is spelled at least three different ways. Early records spell the name as Krupt, later changed to Kruph, translated as Croop, late listings as Grub or Grubb.  [ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/rockingham/churches/peakmtn.txt]

According to the records of Peaked Mountain Church, Rockingham Co., VA all of the eight children of Christian Grub did not come over on the "Robert and Alice". Records of the church refer to his "5 sons and 3 dau." Ernest Grubb writes:

1769, Mar - the will of Christian Grubb is probated. [Will Book 5, p. 477. Federick Co., Virginia]

Will dated 4 March1769. Frederick County Will book 5 page 477

It was recorded in Winchester in Frederick Co., VA. Catherine is named as his wife and all of his eight children. Abraham, his son, was named executor of the estate. He also inherits the bulk of the estate beside being the controller of his mother's share. We must assume that Abraham is the oldest of the children by the position as executor. This probably means that he was the oldest of the surviving children. He could possibly be the oldest surviving male child. Christian apparently dies within the month of between Mar. 4 and Apr. 4 of 1769 This is to certify that the foregoing will of Christian Grubb is a true copy of record as found in the Frederick County Clerk's Office at Winchester, Virginia.
signed Lucy K. Holister, Notary Public in and for County of Frederick , State of Virginia, Feb. 11, 1967

The following inventory of Christina Grubb's estate gives further information on its assessed value.
