1870 - He is found working as a gardner for the wealthy Preston family.
He could have worked for the estate in Virginia or Tennessee since the
border is right here. Shortly after this when Elmira was about 11
or 12 years old she apparently marries to Peter Phipps. See the
1900 Census.

says that she has had 4 children with three
surviving. The third child doesn't show up on this
census. What is really interesting about this census is that Catherine
says that she was only ten or eleven years old when she married
Peter. Robert was born when she was sixteen but there was
probably at least one other child before this. We have no 1890
Census to verify this or identify the child.
