1839 - David Otis Thing was born in Industry, Franklin Co., Maine.

Series: M593  Roll: 1732  Page: 26  Axie seems to be the child of Eli Preble who was also born in Maine.   It looks as though the family move to Wisconsin about 1868 or shortly after the Civil War.

1873, Wisconsin Land Grant is given to David O. Thing and Robert McClung of Polk County for 80 acres together. This is unusual to partnership a grant.  We don't know the relationship of these people to one another at this time.  Certificate # 7838. 20th of June, 1873.
"the West half of the South West quarter, of section Twenty in Township thirty seven North. of Range thirteen West in the district of lands sublject to sale at Falls St. Croix Wisconsin, containing eighty acres." under President Ulysses S. Grant.

At the same time they both received another grant #7826 for eighty acres.
"The East half, of the South West qurter, of Sectiion Twenty, and the South West quarter. of the North East Quarter, of Range fourteen West, in the district of Lands Subject to sale at Falls St. Croix Wisconsin, containing two hundred acres. " under Ulysses S. Grant.

David was a civil war veteran.  I found him in the 11th Census of the United State on Surviving Soldiers.  He was in for 3 years from 30 Jan. 1862 to  29 Jan. 1865.  He was a private when he started and a corporal at the end with the company I--6th Infantry Maine.

1920, Nov 24- Medical examination form, for David O. Thing

 "He receives a pension of fifty dollars per month. He makes the following statement in regard to the origin of his disabilities and date when first discovered by him: Senility gradual onset. April 1920 impaired vision both eyes, Brights disease at same time. Also mental impairment. "   Age 81, height 5ft 11in. `180 lbs sallow complexion, color of eyes blue, color of hair white, occupation retired.
The claimant is 81 years old an shows an advanced degree of senility.
Vision is markedly impaired. Right eye V20/200.
There is evidence of kidney disease and diabetes.
          Urine analysis: clear, acid, sp.gr. I.024, alb. xx, sugar xxx, micr. few granular casts.

The claimant gives evidence of memory impairment, which he states came on following the influenza one year ago.  "

According to family lore she had been a dancer in New York and never had any children.  she dies 28 Apr 1974 in Sonoma, CA.  They married 9 Nov 1935 San Francisco, CA)
