Robert Kirkland was also a commercial fisherman in Portland, Arkansas. Violet used to go out a run the trottlines with him. He would sell the fish to various stores. (interview with Violet Kirkland Christenson)

According to Billie Kurtz her father, William Kirkland, brought Warren Kirkland to Roscoe to be able to take care of him and his mother. William set up the purchase of the gas station on which he put the name "Kirkland and Son". Eventually they also bring Robert's family to Roscoe to work in the gas station with the rest of the family. Roy Kirkland, Forrest's son, also works in the station after he gets out of the air force after WWII.
