John Gower Marshall was born in Kansas but moved to the Indian territory of Oklahoma. From there they moved into the panhandle of Texas. He along with his father's and brother's family came to Washington state about 1900 by wagon. They spent a year in Spokane but then somehow came across the mountains in the winter, probably by going down to Portland and then up the western side of the Cascades to Tacoma.
