1843, 5 Sept - J. W. Marshall is born in Greene Co., Missouri, documented by the family Bible of Wm. Jasper Marshall's Family Bible in possession of Virginia England.

1850 - US Census, Jackson, Greene Co., Missouri.
John Wesley Marshall shows in the census next door to Thomas and Rachael Potter as a child with his mother, Elizabeth Popejoy. Elizabeth Potter had been previously married to John Marshall who died in January of 1845. She remarries very quickly and has two children by John Popejoy also listed here. He dies very soon before this census so she is shown here as a widow.

1852, November 1 - "John Wesley Marshall of Macon Co., Missouri" files a land patent #983 for "the South East quarter of the South East quarter of Section eighteen, in Township fifty-six, of Range fifteen, in the district of lands subject to sale at Milan, Missouri, containing forty acres.  [BLM patent records. Acession #MO4880_.397 BLM Serial# MO NO S/N]
This record can't be for this John W. Marshall. He would only be nine years old.  I'm sure he would have to have been legal age to register this land.  There were several records within a year or two of other patents with the same name but for similar reasons they are unlikely.  So I feel that he didn't get any land and this would have made the decision to leave the area much easier.
