*in the Hart County, Kentucky census of1850, Hart County p. 237 of Squire Sturgeon]

1817- James Sturgeon gives a bond for the marriage of his son, Squire Sturgeon to marry Nancy Moore.

1820- Hart Co., KY census lists heads of family and counts of adults and children of various ages. Squire has 2 boys 0-10 years old, 1 male 18-26, one female 0 - 10 years and one 16 -26 with one person involved in agriculture.

1825- Squire Sturgeon applies for land grants in Hart Co., KY.

1830- Hart Co., KY census lists heads of family and counts of adults and children of various ages.

1840- Hart Co., Ky census
This census has no other information than the head of the families and the count of the children and adults of various ages. Squire Sturgeon has two male children from 0-5 years of age (born between 1835-40), 2 male children 5-10 years old (born between 1830-35), one male 10-15 (born between 1825-30), one male 15-20 (born between 1820-25), one male 40-50 (which should be Squire, born between 1790-1800). He also has one female child 0-5 years old (Nancy, born between 1835-40), one female 15-20 years old (this should be Martha, born between 1820-25) and one female 30-40 years old (this should be Squire's wife, Nancy, born between 1800-1810)

The names of the children listed above mostly come from the census records of Hart County, Kentucky in 1850. Since this is the first census that lists the whole family it is used by most researchers to fill out the family. In this case Squire Sturgeon was already 51 years old in 1850 with a 50 year old wife, Nancy. The oldest child at home listed is only 17 years with youngest only 6 years old. Since the Squire and Nancy had been married about 1817 it is very likely and absolutely certain that he did have older children based on the census of 1820, 1830, and 1840. We know there were at least five to seven more children and we do know the sex of these children with approximate ages. Some of these children undoubtedly live nearby in the 1850 census. Our projection of the family then is developed from those records. We hope that other researchers will help us fill in the blanks. We really need a court record that tell us more. [USCensus, Kentucky 1850, Hart County p. 237]

1850 Hart Co., KY Census- Obediah Sturgeon is living next door to Squire Sturgeon at 45 years old, born in Kentucky. He is a younger brother by six years to Squire. His wife Nancy is 37 Kentucky and their oldest child at home is sixteen years old with the tenth child born in this year. This is probably their entire family. The naming of Squires son as Obediah gives more credibility to this theory. A nephew John and his wife is nearby, son of Reverend John Sturgeon.

There is another brother only a few houses away, James Sturgeon age 59, Kentucky with wife Elizabeth, Willis age 23, (?Passy)m. 17, Catherine 31f. NEXT DOOR is James Martin 22 with Julia 19 and Mary Sturgeon 95 years born in Pennsylvannia. Mary, we feel, is the probable mother of all of the older Sturgeon boys and is probably Mary (Sherman) Sturgeon, the widow of James Sturgeon (b. about 1758). Julia is not listed in any of the family as a Sturgeon but is the probable daughter of James Sturgeon Jr. and Elizabeth Paget. [USCensus, Kentucky 1850, Hart County p. 239]

Our ancestor Martha Sturgeon was probably one of the oldest children. We believe that she was married and moved out of the house by the1840 census. By 1850 she was living in Iowa at age 32 with her own family. We do not have all the documentation to prove this family connection at this point. Naming patterns of the children and coincidental information is all we have to date.

1870- US Census

1900- US Census of Orient, Adair Co., Iowa p.
Martha Sturgeon Henry is listed with her son, Squire Henry at age 80 as a widow. She stated her birthday as Apr 1820 in Kentucky. Her father is listed as born in Kentucky, her mother born in Pennsylvannia.

1912- Granville Sturgeon estate records give some important connections and information.
