# records of John Sturgess.
^Kentucky Marriage Records.
We have records for this family using several different spellings - Sturgus, Sturgess, Sturgis, Sterges. John Sturgess, a relative of John J. Sturgess and Elizabeth Perkins, has provided much of the information on the above marriages and has a good deal of information on later Sturgess heirs.

We are still trying to find the original immigrant Sturgess. We do not know if John Sturgess may have been married prior to this marriage. Since he is projected to be forty-two years old when his first known child born it is very concievable (pardon the pun) that he could have had an earlier marriage and family. Records in Kentucky at this time are lacking to prove many marriages and probate in this frontier. He does show up in Lincoln Co., Kentucky with a young family.

1820 US Census, Lincoln Co., KY, p. 51 line 18 1820, July 27 - Jonathan Stugess marries Peggy Hammons. The peculiar thing about this date is that in the 1820 census Jonathan Sturgess and Peggy seems to already have two children under 10 years old. Transcribed as is.
The Rites of Matromony was solemnise on the 27 day of July 1820 between Jonathan Stugess and Peggy Hammons by Levi Baldock [digital copy forwarded by John M. Sturgess]
Know all men by these presents that we Jonathan Sturgess and John Hammonds are held and firmly boundments the Commonwealth of kentucky in the penal sumof fifty pounds for the payment of which will and truly to be made we find ourselves our hears and jointly and severally firmly by these presents Witness our hands and seals this 27th day of Jyly 1820
Whereas there is a License about to issue for a marriage intended between the above bound Jonathan Sturgess and Peggy Hammond now should there be no legal cause to obstruct said marriage then this obligation to be void else remains in full force invested

Sturgis marriage certificate

1830 US Census, Lincoln Co, KY, p. 351
On the same page we find several associated families living next door to one another. Our main relative is Margaret Sturges, who is head of household with her several children. 1male under 5, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 3 females between 5-10, 1 female 40-50
We assume that there is a set of twin girls possible between 5-10. She seems to be living next door to her probable brother, Henry Hammond, and James Henry, the probable father to John S. Henry who marries Martha Sturgess, daughter of Margaret.
