After the Revolutionary War the loyalists were forced out of South Carolina and many Kirklands moved into Alabama Territory to settle in Henry County, Alabama. Here they cleared the land and homesteaded with great difficulty.
By the time of the Civil War there were several hundred Kirklands living here. Most of the Kirklands were poor farmers and only very few were slave owners although supportive generally of the Southern cause. Elijah Kirkland fought with the Alabama infantry and after the war moved to Arkansas.
