Zacheriah is a farmer. He comes from a long family of Kirklands that spring from Snowden Kirkland (best guess1730-1797). Snowden's adult children Benjamin and Aaron had first settled in Edgefield Co., SC. From here Aaron and several of Benjamin's children migrated to Henry Co, Alabama about 1823. Benjamin's several sons, Benjamin Jr., Caleb, William and Moses left many progeny in Henry County. Estate papers have been found for Moses and William but not for Caleb and Benjamin. There is a bible record of Caleb.
1818, 13 MAY - Zachariah is born to Caleb and Sally Kirkland probably in Edgefield Co, South Carolina. [Caleb and Sally's bible record, see Caleb's family link above]
about1823, - Zachariah's father and a number of other relatives move to Henry Co. Alabama.
1842, 15 Oct - Zachariah applies for a
marriage license to "wife Mary Cole" of North Carolina.
of December 1842. G. W. Williams J. P." [Henry Co. marriages
page 45, Certificate w/ EC]
This seems to say that they were already married by this date. Her father or grandfather is probably Abraham Cole, a neighbor on the 1850 census, 70 years old with Elizabeth Cole,25, both of N.C. He is also the only Cole in Henry Co. Alabama. [Scott, p 324]
First children are born to Zacheriah and
Mary, a possible set of twins with only one, Alice surviving.
One researcher, Mrs W.E. Howell (KSBR v2 p463) attaches Allen A. , who has the same year birth and initials to this family, however, Allen is more properly part of the Isaac Kirkland/Mary Armstrong family even though buried near Z. T. Kirkland in Abbeville City Cem. They were neighbors and possibly cousins.
1845- Seymore (Tuck) is born. (see KSBR V2, 463 for more info on his family.also v1 p315)
1847- Elijah A. is born.[US Census records]
1848- Nancy is born.[US Census records]
Zacheriah and Zacheriah Jr make purchases at a sale of the estate of Moses Kirkland. This indicates to me that there are two adult Zacheriahs alive before Zacheriah T. is born in 1850 (see KSBR v1 p317 for more info on his family.)

1851, Dec. 1st - "Zacheriah" Kirkland files for a patent to land in Henry Co. AL. Certificate # 9361 at the Sparta land office.
1858, Dec. 1st - Zachariah Kirkland files for a patent to land in Henry Co. AL. Certificate # 22087 and 24326 at the Sparta land office.
1862 - Zachariah's oldest son Seymour, enlisted in Confederate Army ,
July - Elijah(17) enlists in the
army. [Ark. Widow's Application for Pension #14607,
Conf. Veterans and Widows Pensions Application, 1985]
Zachariah's eldest sons, Seymour(19) is captured in 1864, immediately released, came home, served at home until 1865. [KSBR v2 p52]
24 Nov 1864 - We assume that Zachariah is
widow who applies for a marriage license to Sarah Culverhouse.
Co. marriages., KSB v2 p36]
A "Sarah" (27 GA) was married to J. J. Culverhouse in the 1860 census.[US census 1860, Henry p. 168] She had three children, six years and younger. I'm unsure if this is the same person. It is conceivable that she was widowed before 1864 and Zacheriah would still have been only 47 years old. I have not been able to verify even if this is the correct Zachariah except for the "Sarah, widow of Zacheriah" in his probate records.
Within the next two months Zachariah Kirkland dies. The estate records cause some confusion since they at first did not include the child with Sarah Culverhouse. The name of the child has offered even more confusion by adding a male surname. Dr. Peacock supposes justifiably that Sarah Culverhouse Kirkland was probably pregnant at the time of Zacheriah's death and had the child there after. She memorialized her husband with the naming of the daughter as Zacheriah Marymum Kirkland.
1865, January 3 - his estate goes into
probate, so Zacheriah has died by this date, [Estate Record Book
1869, 31 July - Another list of survivors of the estate is given in with heirs as: Sarah J. Kirkland, (the widow), who resided in Dale County; Alice Merrit, the wife of Francis M. Merritt; Seymour Kirkland; Elijah A. Kirkland; George M. Kirkland; Zachariah Taylor Kirkland; Caleb Ransom Kirkland; Zachariah Marymum "Mary" Kirkland. George M., Zachariah Taylor and Caleb Ransom were minors heirs over 14 years of age, and Zachariah Marymum was a minor under 14 years of age. Seven children were born to the first marriage, of which one preceded the father in death, one was born to the second marriage, the last heir listed. [Estate packet 1322, and OCR Book P, page 259, dated 31 July 1869] [Peacock 223]
1870 - The U. S. Census for Henry County lists:
Alice(25) and F. M. Meritt(36), are also on this page with Mary S.(f5), Moen F.(f3),Clifford L. (f2) Jani M. (f4mo). [US Census 1870/AL/Henry, p334]
We find three of Zachariah's children together in the household of Edward Blackledge in the 8th Precinct, Abbeville, Henry Co., p. 370 a & b. They probably learned some of their wood working skills under the tutelage of this carriage maker. Notice that Seymore ends up marrying Sarah Blacklidge. Mrs. Howell has Sarah's father listed as "Edmond" Blackledge but although the census record is difficult to decipher I read it as Edward.[KSBR p463]
If Zacheriah's widow, Sarah, is in the area, I haven't found her to date. George M. is the only other unaccounted for member of the family. He would be 19 years old and probably on his own.
1872, before Sep 20 - Alice (Kirkland) Merritt dies. She leaves her husband, Francis M. Merritt whom she married 19 Feb. 1864, the son of Jcob and Sybil (?) Merritt. Her issue was: Marry S. Merritt, (1m. J. Murphy 2m. J. D. Jackson); Malinda F. Merritt (m. P. S. Whitehead); Clifford L. Merritt (m. J. B. Whitehead) ; and an unknown child who died young. 1876- Friday, July 7 - "Mrs. Sallie Kirkland, wife of Seymour Kirkland, of Abbeville, died on 4th instant, at home of her father, Edmond Blackledge. She leaves a husband, mother, father, several brothers and sisters and four small children." [Death Notices, The Henry County Register, 1875, KSBR v.1 p313]
Mr. Edward Seymore (Tuck) Kirkland was the
brother of Zachariah Taylor Kirkland and was most noted for his
excellent wood working skills. He also lived on what was later
Kirkland Street one house south of the Blacklidge home, now
Bank." [pamphlet of the 100th Anniversary of the Abbeville
Methodist Church, Abbeville, Alabama.]
