Holmgaard Mill, Ydby, Denmark - birthplace of Christen Mikkelsen Møller.
This undated photo pictures two children who remain a mystery on the edge of mill pond. 
The mill on the left has since been destroyed but the building in later photos seems to have still remained until about the 1940's.

Møller means "miller" in Danish. The spelling of the name is confusing because it has so many derivations.  Various relatives spell it Kresten or Christen Mikkelsen who did operate a mill here as his father had before him. He was born on this land. Just over the ridge in direction of the photograph probably less than a mile is the North Sea. This has to be a very tough place to grow grain and make a living for his large family.

These people were hardworking farmers and millers living in a windswept area just off the North Sea. This wind provides today much electricity for the region through a series of high-tech wind generators near Nissum.

The short growing season and climate still controls much of the activity and economy of the area, predictably creating a group of people that can put up with great adversity and are very persevering.

Most of the children were christened in the Søndbjerg Church.

According to Lars Balleby, researcher who has checked the records above against the original documents, the private baptism was given when the child was ill or unable to find a vicker known as "hjemmedøbt".   Church baptism would happen later known as " Fremstillet i kirken".

1805, Dec 5 Birgithe Marie Christensdatter is born but baptized in 1806. She is obviously named after her grandmother.

1805, Dec - Brigitte seems to have been living at the Stokhojgaard when she was born.  This particular version of the house was built in 1893 after almost doubling in size. 

   
Stokhojgaard farm is named after some nearby neolithic stone burial sites that have long been removed.

1831, 29 Mar - Birgitte Marie Christendatter marries Christian Michelsen Møller in Søndbjerg, Thisted, Denmark. His age is 26 and she is 25. the parents are listed  as his parents Michel Møller of Søndberg  and her witness is her possible brother Mads Christensen of Hellerøe  (her father had died in 1829.) 1832 - March 3 - Søren Christensen is baptized, son of Christen Mikkkelsen Møller and Birgitte Marie Christensdatter of Søndberge [Danish Family Search]

April 19, 1846 Søren Christensen is confirmed in Søndbjerg Church at the age of 14years 1mo. with his birthday listed.

1834 Census from the Danish National Archives. Thisted.  Christens and Birgitte have only been married for a couple of years by this census.  Mikkel Poulsen Møller, his father, is also living in the household at age 67.  Another girl is here probably as household help. 

1836, March 5 - Mads Christensen is born and baptized March 8.  to Christian Mikkelsen Møller and Marie Christensdatter.  [Danish Family Search, Søndbjerg p.36]

1840 Census from the Danish National Archives. Thisted.  This census shows that his father is still alive at the age of 73.

1841, 19 Dec. - Peder Legind Christensen is born,  he is bapt. 1841, 30th Dec.  [Danish Family Search, Søndbjerg p.47]  This person has the same name as my grandfather born in 1882.  My grandfather also had a brother who was born in 1879 by the same name but also died early at the age of 2.5 years. "Legind"is a farm in the region on which the family lived. It apparently is still occupied by members of the family.

1880 census shows that Birgitte Marie Kristensen is lioving with her son Peder Stokholm Christensen in Søndbjerg. 
 Another son, Mikkel Kristian Kristensen is also in this census.  He is living with his wife who is 23 years his senior, Ane Marie Nielsen and a couple of servants.  Mikkel and Ane Marie don't seem to have any children of their own.

1900, Oct 30 - Mikkel Christensen Møller remarries after his wife dies.  He is listed as "Enkemand" in the marriage register.  He marries Sidsel Iversen who is 33 years old while he is 60 years old.  His first wife, Ane Marie Nielsdatter is listed as having died 26 June 1894 at age 77.

1926, Oct 22 - Mikkel Christian Møller, son of Christian Mikkelsen Møller, dies in Søndbjerg.  His recorded death also gives his parents and his two wives names.  His first wife seems to have been 23  years older than him.
