Paul Nielsen is listed in various locations or farms in the Løten region just east of present day Hamar. This hilly region is about a hundred miles north of Oslo. This is about the same latitude as Anchorage, Alaska. Sondre Malum farm where Poul Nielsen was born is about 5 miles from Tomter and the Vallset Kirke where he was christened. It a fairly heavily forested area.  There could be some tough winters here although fire wood is abundant. I suspect that the families here cut logs for houses built in area. The Helgeaasen farm would be even more remote and further to the south-east.  Large families with limited farm land and short growing seasons caused many to see immigration as a way for the younger generations to prosper.

in the original version of 1805 there seems to be an easier reading. It indicates that Paavel is of Leuten/Løten. A potential couple of great aunts are here as Marthe Olsdatter and  Margarethe Jonsdatter of Malum

1834, 11 Apr - Paul's first marriage to Mari Jensdatter Larsen probably took place in Romedal churuch while living at Helgeaasen. She listed as "Enka" or widow.   He's 26 and she's 27.  She apparently already had three daughters.[Norway Archives, Romedal 1829-1846, 1843, page 201.  http://www.arkivverket.no]

1843, 25 "Mai" - Poul Nielsen marries again to Martha Eriksdatter in Skaaraashagen, Vallset (Tomter) Hedmark, Norway. He's identified as 38 years old and she is 22. This record also identifies the father of Paul as Niels Paulsen and Martha's father as Erik Hanson. The name of the farm is difficult to transcribe.  It may be the farm Skaaraashagen or Skåråshagen that is listed in the Romedalboka, Vol. 4, part 1.  I have not been able to find this text for a translation.

Roden No2 , Skoleaarets record for January to May, page 26 - lists Even Paulsen 9 1/4 living at Bjornerud farm.  He seems to be the only school age child from this farm although there are four children from an adjoining farm of Bjorneruderie.  Bjorneruderie is one of several small houses on the estate of Bjornerud reserved for workers.

1858 - Roden No2, Skoleaarets records for Mai to graduation. page 30.  lists Even Paulsen 9 1/4 living on the Bjornerud farm.  He seems to be one of only two school age children from this farm although there are four children from an adjoining farm living in Bjorneruderie

1864, May 2 - Lena Poulsdatter of Lindstadeie , born Helgeasen,  (age 28) marries Christian Andersen of Lahlumeie (age 21) his father is listed as Anders Christophersen and hers is listed as Poul Nielsen  [SAH. Stange prestekontor, K/L0013: Ministereialbok nr. 13, 1862-1879, s.235]

1865 - Tomter Skoledreds - for 65 days, page 71 -   #9 - Helene Paulsdatter is at Tomter  ( there is no listing for Even or Magnus, they seem to have graduated.)

1865- Census records of Romedal Parish, Norway shows Even Pauls (Paul's son). with his mother, Marthe Erikd. (Erik's daughter) living on the land of Mathias Christians. Sund, a parish preacher within the "Rohne Skoledistrikt." It seems times were tough for Even's mother, at this time 45 years old. Even's father had died when he was about nine years old. His mother is apparently working here for the parish preacher's family as a milk maid as part of the support needed for the family. Even is eighteen and working on the farm with his brother Johan Magnus and his sister Pauline. Another daughter Martha seems to be working as a house servant for another family in the area.

Mathea Paulsdatter perhaps living in Nordryn and may have moved to Oslo. Maurice Jenson says that she is may have been a singer in Oslo. [Maurice Jenson After Paul Nielsen's death Martha is known to have lived in these farms.  I have a more complete history of the several Rohne farms around Løten.

1870, Dec 11- Martin Rasmusen is born to Hellene Paulsdatter and Rasmus Olsen.  [LDS Norway, baptisms, 1634-1927] Hellene never married to Rasmus Olsen.

The Norway Archive photo shows that Martin was illegitimate but that Even Paulsen Rohne and Pauline Paulsdatter were also witnesses to the baptism. Being "illegitimate" was a fairly common notation.  It seems that some couples would live together for some years while even having children until they finally got around to marriage.  [Norwegian Nat. Archives, digitized parish records, Hedmark, Romedal, Official Parish Register, 1871, page 083]

         Martin Rohne's birth

1872, Oct - Johan Magnus Poulsen, a bachelor, born in 1844 is supposed to have "out-migrated" from Norway.  However, the death date I have shows that he may not have done that and may have died prior in January of 1872 by drowning or the year may be 1873 for his death.
